Make a Difference to Yourself - Don't Live Up to Your Potential!

How many times have you heard the phrase "they have great potential" or "you are not living up to your potential?" These sayings are meaningless when you stop and examine what potential really is and how easy it is to live up to. Take for example a golf ball, a basketball, and a bowling ball on top of a hill. In terms of energy, the balls share the same potential (energy). Potential energy is energy at rest. So by simply doing nothing, the balls are living up to their full potential. Remember this the next time you tell someone they are not living up to their potential. What you are really telling them is that they are amounting to less then nothing since by doing nothing they should theoretically already be living up to their potential. By definition, potential energy can be thought of as energy which is stored in a system. It has nothing to do with the ability to get things done. It may have a great amount of energy stored inside it, a great potential, but if this energy is not acted upon, it will remain useless. If the balls start to roll down the hill, they begin to transform their potential energy to kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of action. Things get accomplished and work gets done by kinetic energy. Without kinetic energy in our lives, nothing would get accomplished.

Challenge yourself in the way you think. To fully be able to make a difference to yourself, you must think about the kinetic energy inside of you and measure yourself on how effectively you are converting your potential energy to your energy of action. Thank about the balls at the top of the hill. If left alone, all they will do is live up to their potential at the top of the hill. To start their downward journey and to live up to their kinetic energy, they need a shove to get things going. Are you stagnating? Just sitting there - wallowing in your own potential? Do you need a shove to get things going? If so, what is it? What can you do right now to start your ball rolling, picking up kinetic energy? If you can manage the initial shove, you can start the journey of converting your potential to your kinetic.

Once you get the ball rolling, what are you going to do to keep up the momentum? If you let it stop, you go back to having potential with nothing to show for it. The trick is to master how to keep the ball rolling and keep the energy turning into kinetic. This is done by setting a series of milestone goals or step goals. You have the overall end goal in mind, but how do you get there? You must break the goal into steps or small pieces which are easier to handle. The key is to keep the ball rolling without getting burnt out in the process. Step goals and frequent rewards allow you to keep the positive energy transfer on track.

Just remember not to think about your potential. You must start thinking about your kinetic. To achieve your full kinetic you need two things:

A shove to get you started

Small step goals and rewards to keep you going

Once you get started - don't stop. The kinetic way is the best way to start Making a Difference to you!
